If landing in Osaka, Sydney flights generally range from 13h to 18h. Melbourne flights take anywhere from 15h to 24h with some going longer due to layovers. Brisbane flights typically range from 16h to 24h. For longer itineraries to Osaka, typical layovers are at Singapore Changi Airport, Haneda Airport (HND), or Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
A non-stop flight from Australia to Japan leaves from Sydney Airport, arrives at Haneda Airport, and takes around 9h 35min. Alongside that, there are plenty of Japan flights that include one or two layovers. If landing in Tokyo, the fastest flight from Melbourne Airport to Haneda Airport is about 12h 40min with one stopover at Sydney Airport. From Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Haneda Airport is roughly 13h with a stopover at Sydney Airport. A flight from Perth Airport (PER) to Narita Airport (NRT) takes 13h 45min or so with a stopover at Singapore Airport. Lastly, from Adelaide Airport (ADL) to Haneda Airport is about 15h 40min with a layover at Sydney Airport. Alternatively, if landing in Osaka, you can fly from Sydney Airport to Kansai Airport (KIX) in about 12h 50min with a layover at Haneda Airport. Melbourne Airport to Kansai Airport will take about 15h 55min with stops at Sydney Airport and Haneda Airport. With the same two layovers, a flight from Brisbane Airport to Kansai Airport takes 16h 20min or so, and one from Adelaide Airport to Kansai Airport takes about 18h 55min. Lastly, a flight from Perth Airport (PER) to Kansai Airport takes around 14h 5min with a stop at Hong Kong International Airport.
Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto are three popular destinations in Japan. To get from Tokyo to Osaka, you can take a plane, train, or bus. Regular flights go between Narita Airport or Haneda Airport and Kansai Airport or Itami Airport. The fastest option is the Nozomi train (about two and a halfh) and the cheapest option is to get a bus ticket. Transport options from Tokyo to Kyoto include a bus or train. An overnight bus typically takes around seven to 9h depending upon which station you depart from and arrive at. The quickest option is the Nozomi train, which takes around 2h 20min. There is no direct flight to Kyoto, but you may fly to nearby Osaka airports and take the train or bus. For Kyoto to Osaka or vice versa, trains are a great option. The bullet train will take you from Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka Station in 15min or so, whereas the budget-friendly Special Rapid Train will take around 30min.
Australian citizens travelling to Japan for tourism don’t need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days. However, they do need to have a passport that is valid for the duration of their stay. It’s advisable to have a passport with at least six months validity from the date of return. A minimum of one blank page for entry and exit stamps is also required.
