Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto are three popular destinations in Japan. To get from Tokyo to Osaka, you can take a plane, train, or bus. Regular flights go between Narita Airport or Haneda Airport and Kansai Airport or Itami Airport. The fastest option is the Nozomi train (about two and a halfh) and the cheapest option is to get a bus ticket. Transport options from Tokyo to Kyoto include a bus or train. An overnight bus typically takes around seven to 9h depending upon which station you depart from and arrive at. The quickest option is the Nozomi train, which takes around 2h 20min. There is no direct flight to Kyoto, but you may fly to nearby Osaka airports and take the train or bus. For Kyoto to Osaka or vice versa, trains are a great option. The bullet train will take you from Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka Station in 15min or so, whereas the budget-friendly Special Rapid Train will take around 30min.
Australian citizens travelling to Japan for tourism don’t need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days. However, they do need to have a passport that is valid for the duration of their stay. It’s advisable to have a passport with at least six months validity from the date of return. A minimum of one blank page for entry and exit stamps is also required.
