DO NOT RENT FROM EUROPECAR in Lisbon. When we returned the car at the end they found one small scratch on the end of the mirror and charged me $150 for it. What a rip-off. It was clear at drop off that they make extra money by doing a better inspection at return than they do at pick-up, and then gouging the renter for the repairs. The inspector even cleaned a few dead bugs off of the other mirror to make sure they weren't rock-chips. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY A SET UP. Expect to have problems if you rent from them.

The car was fine. It didn’t have central locking which was annoying. It was pretty battered too but was serviceable and did the job. Pick up was relatively straightforward. The real problem came on return. We had been unexpectedly held up in the centre of Oaxaca because several vehicles had been hijacked and strategically dumped around the centre, bringing the city to a standstill. As a result, what should have been a 15 minute drive became 2 hours. When we got to the europcar office, we explained our predicament and that we only had an hour until our flight was due to depart and could they possibly get us to the airport asap. They shrugged and said it will take 10 minutes to go over the car in detail and they can’t help - even though I had fully comp insurance cover. They then deliberately took their time - 2 guys standing about joking and the other VERY slowly making his way around the car. 10 minutes became 15. He would stop occasionally to join in the joke (I videoed part of this process as it was outrageous). We had spilled a drink in the car and he explained that we would have to pay £90 to have it cleaned, presumably a process they would do anyway. We had no choice as the minutes were ticking. Eventually we were given a very slow bus ride to the airport and unsurprisingly we did miss our flight. By 5 minutes. I honestly thought that europcar was a reliable brand - the McDonald’s of car hire, but alas they failed big time. I had additional costs all over the place as a result, running into hundreds of pounds. Eouropcar had an opportunity to really excel and go the extra mile, but instead they have annoyed a regular customer to the extent that I will avoid the brand and their affiliates, regardless of price, from now on.

First thing said to me was "you're early". I was 50 minutes ahead of schedule due to a fast flight and faster-than-expected transit from gate to car agency. I overheard other representatives imposing penalties for dropping the car off (or picking up) earlier or later than the booked time. In the end, I managed to get what I needed, but I got the sense that part of the business model is "gotcha" fees imposed above and beyond. I would expect a fee if you keep the car longer than the agreed number of days, but imposing fees fro dropping off early?! Vehicle also was unable to connect to my phone via bluetooth or USB.

Unfortunately, the experience was awful. First I arrived and they told me they didn’t have the car type I had reserved. They offered me a downgrade and when I inspected the car it was 10+ years old with multiple large dents and the yellow tire pressure signal turned on after starting the car. I asked them why the tire pressure signal was on and they said it was likely a mechanical error but their air machine wasn’t working regardless. I asked them if they expected me to go to a gas station to inflate the tire, and their response was “yes.” Did they care for my safety… clearly not. I asked if they had any other vehicles on the premises and they said they could only put me in a Dodge van or charger. I had requested an suv. However, I would have to pay extra since those cars would be considered an “upgrade.” This was very poor service. Fortunately, simultaneously, another person pulled up to return their car and I asked for their car instead. When they said it would take a while to detail it, another car I suppose magically appeared because the person working the counter said I could take the “manager’s car” and they wouldn’t charge me for gas. This was strange to me… do managers of car rental vendors get their own cars? In any case, I took the car (Toyota Camry, also a downgrade) and drove it 2 hours to my final destination. When I arrived, the tire pressure signal appeared on this car as well. When I went to inflate the tires, I learned that the max psi should be 50 psi. However, one tire was in the 20’s, two tires were in the high 50’s, and the last tire was in the 70’s. This was ridiculously unsafe! When I returned the car, I asked them to make a note that I shouldn’t be charged for gas as the attendant explained to me when I first received the car. However, they didn’t make a note in my paperwork so the person explained I would be charged. Fortunately, the same attendant I worked with on my initial day was present and I told them what happened and they resolved the issue. Finally, one silver lining! I will never rent a car from this company again and strongly recommend no one do the same. EuropCar and Fox have awful vehicles and even worse service at this location in Jacksonville, FL.
