You have a choice of departure airports in Australia – you can fly out from Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane. This is a long-haul flight that will take about take about 19h and 20min on the shortest routes out of Melbourne, which are flown by Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways in combination with Wizz Air, and Emirates together with Flydubai, Ukraine International Airlines, or SkyUp Airlines. If you’re flying from Brisbane, you can choose Qatar Airways as well, which will take about 19h and 45min to make the trip. You can also choose to fly on Emirates, which will hand over to the same airlines as above for a total flying time of about 20h and 25min. Flights that take off from Sydney on Etihad combining with Wizz Air will take about 20h, with those booked on Emirates and Qatar Airways taking about 20h and 20min. You can also fly on Air India, which will get you there together with Ukraine International in just under 21h.

Can you get direct flights to Ukraine from Australia?

Currently there are no non-stop flights from Australia to Ukraine, so to save on your flying time, choose one of the flights that make a single stop on the way. The fastest ones take just under 20h to make the trip. You can leave from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL) on Qatar Airways, which stops over at Doha International (DOH) on the way, landing at Kyiv Boryspil International Airport (KBP) in Ukraine. The Etihad Airways flights make their stop over at Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) where you’ll change to Wizz Air to fly to KBP. The Emirates flights make their stopovers at Dubai International Airport (DXB), where you’ll change to one of Ukraine International Airlines, SkyUp, or the relatively cheap flights that Flydubai offers. The routes from Brisbane Airport (BNE) go via Doha on Qatar Airways or Dubai on Emirates, for flight times of between 19h and 45min and 20h and 30min. Pretty much the same options are offered out of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) taking from around 20h to about 21h. It has the additional option of flying on Air India via New Delhi Airport (DEL).

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, and it’s not difficult to get from there to other tourist cities and attractions in the Black Sea region. The second most popular city after Kyiv is Kharkiv. You can reach it from Kyiv by taking a train journey of about 5h. If you prefer to get a taxi or hire a car, it will take about 6h and 10min to drive there. Odessa is perhaps a more famous city, and you can fly there from Kyiv, landing at its domestic airport about 3h and 30min later. The bus will take about 6h to get there, or you can drive the distance in just over 5h. The city of Dnipro is to the south-west, a train journey of around 6h away. Bus journeys will take a little under 9h, while you can drive there in about 6h and 30min.
